Final Music Video

Monday 29 November 2010

Music video

After watching this version of my music video, there is one part i want to change. When we see the frame dropping in slow motion, and then it cuts to a close up of the frame falling; it dosent look smooth at all. This has happend many times on Final Cut (without me changing anything), and i am not happy with presenting it as my final piece of coursework as i know it can be better as that is how i edited it. When I change the speed to 30, save it and then when watching it again the time has change to 30.16 making it look like this, i will change this part and then present that as my final music video.

Extended Information On Our Target Audience

Tuesday 23 November 2010

Re-Shoot on Friday 19th November

Once we had our rough-cuts for our music video, we decided as a group there was room for more footage (for the narrative parts). Scenes we thought we could add in where:

1) Both Frankie and George walking into their house together, (so the audience understand their relationship has been going on for a while and is serious; as they live together)

2a) Frankie and George on their sofa - cuddling and in love

2b) Frankie and George on their sofa - having an argument

2c) Frankie on her own on the sofa - lonely

3) Frankie and George doing something 'normal' together e.g making a cup of tea or walking the dog; but acting in a way that it makes it obvious to the audience that they are in love

 4) Frankie and George in bed together, cuddling, talking - nothing rude or explicit

I wasn't able to attend the shoot, but Vinuri, Frankie and George did an excellent job filming and acting, meaning we now have more good quality footage we can use.

Final Plan

This is the final plan for our shoot, it includes: Actors, Misc en Scene, Costume/Clothing and Locations.

Rough Cut -

Letter Of Permission

A member from our group, Vinuri Perera; compiled a letter to send to the Copyright holders of the song we would like to use 'Jamelia - Numb'.  This was the letter:

RE: Permission to use Jamelia's BBC Radio 1 Live Lounge cover track:

Dear Copyright holder,

I am an A-Level Media Studies Student from Park High School in Stanmore, and i am filming and producing a music video as part of my coursework.

As owners of the song, i would be grateful if you were to grant us permission to use your song; "Jamelia - Numb."

We are requesting non-exclusive rights and it is understood that full acknowledgement will be given to the source.

If i receive your permission for this track, it would only be viewed by my Media class, my teacher and the OCR examining board. It would not be released to large audiences but would be uploaded to our schools YouTube account.

Your prompt considerations of this request would be greatly appreciated.

Yours Sincerely,

Vinuri Perera

Storyboard

Overall as a group, we created 2 storyboards; our initial storyboard and our revised storyboard.

This was our inintial shotlist:

And this was our revised shotlist:

1.  Close up - Frankie is not looking at the camera; she is looking out of the window. It will be in Mrs Baldwin house. We'll need water to make it look like shes crying and she will be the only one in the shot.

2. Close up - Of the notebook. Witha tear dropping onto the page on the word 'Numb'. It will be in the house and will need a notebook, pen and water.

3. Mid shot - In the studio. We see her singing into a microphone, looking and listening to the music; this will be in black and white. It will be in Park High's music Studio, props will be at a minimal as we want the focus to be on the singer

4.  Long shot - To set scene and follow them (Frankie and George) as they are walking towards a bench. It will be in centenary Park. The actors will be acting as if they are in a loving relationship

5. Mid shot - In front of them sitting on the bench. They are talking, laughing etc.

6. Close up - Of her face as we want her to be the main focus of the shot. It will again be in the music studio and will be from a different angle and closer up.

7. Long shot - In Mrs Baldwins house. It will be from behind the TV looking at the couple when they are  together. The lighting will be quite dark, with the only real source of light coming from the TV.

8. Mid shot - Back into the studio, from a different angle than previously.

9. Long shot - From the side and quite low down. It will be in the Park on the bench and we watch George get up and he leaves Frankie who remains on the bench

10.  Close up - Back into the studio from a higher angle to show her vulrnability (the lyrics will match this vulrnability)
 11.  Mid shot - Frankie walking into the house. She walks into the house and closes the door. She looks happy looking down and holding a photo frame of George and herself in the picture frame.

12. Point of view shot - Looking at the stairs and seeing clothes scattered up the stairs. They see the clothes on the stairs of a girl and a boy indicating he cheated on her.
 13. Close up - Frankie's hand starts to drop with the photoframe. It has to be a close up of her hand so it is clear and obvious that its her hand and that the frame is dropping 14.  Extreme Close up - The frame dropping to the floor and smashing

15. Mid shot - Back to Frankie perfoming in the studio

Pottential Album Cover, Back Cover and Inside Cover

These are two of the pottential front album covers: The main differenece between the two is the the font of the artists name 'Hayleigh'. The picture used cleary shows the artisits face and as she is knew to the 'music scene' i feel this is something very important when a artist is trying to be successfull. The main colour scheme for both of the covers is black, purple and white; which is a suitable colour scheme for our target audience as well as for the artist (gender, age).

I asked a number of people within our target audience specification, which of a select few photographs (6) they thought i should use for my album cover. The photo's i showed them were:

The first cover has had the best reaction from two; after i had asked 20 people fitting the target audience. They liked the colour effect on the picture as well as the style of writing for the artisists name and the purple glow around it. One feature which they felt could be changed was the style of writing for the album name 'Infinity', the colouring was fine (as it fit in with the colour sceme); but it could be improved.

The second pottential album cover's difference between the first is the style the artist name is writen. Some of the people i asked liked the effect of the purple glow around the box of the letters, where as others did not (which is why i changed the writing on the other album cover). They felt it was to stiff and could be much smoother. Again, they liked the picture; and felt if anything the picture should stay and the coulour effect used with it.

For the back cover i used a picture which i felt corresponds with the front, but still shows our artist. Both front and back are pictures taken with a brick wall as the background, the front cover shows the face of our artict and the back cover shows the back of the artist (in the same clothes/costume). For both pottential back covers i have put the artists name  and the name of the album as well as a track list. I decided on putting the track list on the back of our artisits jacket, and the feedback i have got for this particular part of the back cover has been very positive. The two covers show the artists name in the two different styles used on the front cover. With the second cover getting a better reception than the first; concluding that for both the front and back covers i will be using the smoother font with the purple glow just around the letterin and not boxed.

For the inside covers, research has showed that some artists have the lyrics of the songs (and who made/produced them) on the album inside, some have pictures of the artisits and others have a mixture of both. As my artist is new to the music scene i ahve decided to go with pictures, so the audinece can familiarise themselves with her and see the 'style' of clothing and make up she uses.

The first is a collage of pictures, not long shots or mid shots, but souly focussing on her facial features. Only three photos have been used, 2 of her lips and 1 of her eyes, but they have been put into a pattern/sequence. Each horrizontal line has a different effect for that set of pictures. I showed this to my target audience and asked them what they thought of it as one of the inside pannel and if i should or should not use it. 20 people were asked and all 20 said yes i should be put in as one of the pannels; the main feature they liked was the change in effect on each line.

This is the second of the inside covers, it is similar to the first; as it uses the same pictures on each line, but each line has a different effect. For the second, i have gone for more of a colourfull feel, and i used mid-shot pictures of our artist; showing her face and some clothing.

This is the album cover for Cheryl Cole's first album "3 Words"

I like this album cover, as it clearly shows Cheryl Cole as a solo artist (from being in the band Girls Aloud). She is establisihing herself as s new artisit and that is what our artist is also doing, which is why i feel that this is an inspirational cover. The mid-shot of the artist allows us to see her face clearly and is  a good way to start as a new act. I would like to use something like this when making my album cover, as if feel it is important for our artist to be clearly notcieable and recogniseable. It is her first album and it is representing her image and style that she is being introduced to the media in. I also like the way the album title and artist name is written as it subtle yet it blends in with the picture.

Eminem and Rihanna - Love The Way You Lie

This is the video for the song "Love The Way You Lie" by Eminem and Rihanna.
Some of the video's concepts match that of the video i am creating. There are visuals of good relationships:

Breakdown in a relationship:
Both of which are concepts we/i would like to use in my video. I feel it fits in well with the song and it's lyrics; and are two features of a relationship used in the song. I also like the shot of the mid-shot of the female character when she is lying down after a row with her boyfriend, the shot if focussed on her face which is good as it shows us her emotions. Here she looks upset and lonely.

Shontelle - Impossible

This is the video for Shontelle's single Impossible. This video shows some of the shots, settings and effects i would like to use in my video; making it very insparational. Some similarities betwen this video and the music video i will be creating are; the female vocalist in both, the lyrics linking to relationships and the song sung in a balad.

This is one of the effects i would like in my video, i like how the colour changes from normal to black and white, when she goes back and forth from present day to her past memories. I would like to do a similar thing with the shots of her in the music studio in black and white and her past memories in colour.
Another part of this video i are the shots of Shontelle writing down the lyrics of the song in a notebook/diary. I would like to use a similar thing in my video as i feel the lyrics are meaningful, sensitive, personal and from the heart; feelings you would usually find in someone's diary.

Lastly, i like the idea of shooting some of the video in a recording/music studio. There are sections of this video which show this, i feel as if it would fit in with the style of my song; as it is sung in some sections very powerfully and it would also make sense for my artist to be singing the song in a recording studio.

Hayleigh - Photoshoot

These are some of the pictures taken from our artists photoshoot. The first location, where most of the shots are taken was inside a house - where the backgrounds of plain black and white were made from bedsheets which which we stuck to the walls; to create the effect of a more "proffeesional" style. The second location is outside; using the side of house (bricks) as the background. These photo's show 5 of the 6 outfits we used on the day.

Target Audience

1.) How would you describe the target audience for this kind of music? Is there a core and secondary audience?
Our performer in the music video is a young lady; which may then open doors to various audience groups. It would defenately then appeal to younger audiences (13 - late 20s), of both genders; female as the performer is a female they may aspire to be like; and male - for more of the sex appeal. Although i have stated a specific age group, the song and its video may appeal to older audiences as well as audience members of different genres as the song is of a Rock genre but covered by an RnB artist.
2.) How would you desribe the tastes and attitudes of the target audience?
The song itself is slightly mainstr Heam as the lyrics (sung by a female vocalist) are based on and aorund a realtionship with a boy. But it isnt mainstream in the sense that there is no mention of drug, sex and violence. Target audience members will most likely be into the meaning and feelings of a song rather than focussed on the tempo of a song.
3.) What functions does this kind of music serve to its audience (uses and gratifications)?
The main purpose for this song would be for pleasure and for the audience to listen to in their own time.
4.) Music fans often use music to help construct their own cultural and visual identity - how do fans of your artist or band do this?
They would be able to adopt or adapt Hayleigh's (artist) dress sense and they way her personality is portrayed through her songs as well as in the eyes of the media; thorugh pictures, magazines etc. Part of her personlaity will also be shown through her clothing styles, for example excentric or intrinsic.

These are a few pictures of our artist Hayleigh, which may shape the target audience.
